Practical differences for local talk, clearer audio and longer-range opportunities.
Start with local usage
Before buying, listen to what operators near you use. AM remains familiar to many operators, while FM can sound quiet between transmissions when squelch is set appropriately. SSB is useful for weak-signal voice contacts but requires matching sideband selection and tuning with the other station.
What matters more than a mode label
A well-installed antenna, clean power, usable microphone, strong receiver performance and local operating activity usually matter more than headline marketing claims.
- Verify the radio is compliant for your region
- Consider available controls and display readability
- Plan for antenna and mounting costs
Buying used equipment
Inspect for modifications, missing knobs, damaged connectors and unverified repairs. Ask for basic transmit/receive checks performed with suitable instruments.
