How to Predict CB Skip: Solar Weather and 11-Meter Propagation

Understand F-region propagation and what solar activity may mean for CB contacts.

Why the band opens

The 27 MHz Citizens Band can sometimes support long-distance skywave signals when ionospheric conditions permit. The ionosphere varies with solar activity, time of day, season and geomagnetic disturbances.

What to check

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center publishes solar and geomagnetic information. No single number guarantees that 11-meter skip will open at your location, so on-air monitoring and operator reports remain useful.

  • Check recent solar activity and geomagnetic forecasts
  • Listen for distant stations on active channels
  • Record time and direction of stations heard

When conditions change

Expect rapid changes. A quiet band can become crowded, and strong skip may make nearby operators harder to hear. Legal operating limits still apply during openings.
