CB Radio Safety and Legal Operating Basics

A good radio installation is safe first. Follow the equipment manual, local electrical requirements and the current FCC rules for the service you are operating.

RF exposure and distance

Antennas and transmitters can expose nearby people to radiofrequency energy. Follow manufacturer separation and exposure guidance, and do not mount high-power transmitting antennas where people can touch them during operation.

Electrical and weather hazards

Keep antennas and guy lines clear of power lines. Plan grounding, surge protection and lightning protection with qualified help where appropriate. Never install or service an antenna during a thunderstorm.

Respect the service rules

CB power and emission limits are defined by FCC Part 95. Using an external RF power amplifier or an uncertified transmitter in the CB service can violate U.S. rules. Ham radio privileges do not change CB equipment requirements.

Interference troubleshooting

If a nearby device produces noise, inspect your installation and power sources first. Use ferrites and correct cable practices where appropriate; do not attempt to jam or interfere with other radio users.
