Understand antenna height, feed lines, lightning safety and local coverage.
Height and site selection
For many local line-of-sight contacts, antenna height and an unobstructed location can make a meaningful difference. However, tall installations bring additional wind, grounding and structural considerations.
Common forms
A vertical antenna is commonly used for general CB work. Ground-plane designs rely on radials or an appropriate counterpoise. A horizontal dipole has a different radiation pattern and polarization; results vary with the stations you want to contact.
Safety first
Follow local electrical and structural codes, manufacturer instructions, and lightning/grounding best practices. Do not mount antennas where they could contact power lines even if they fall.
- Plan a safe mast and guy system
- Weatherproof external connections
- Use suitable grounding and surge protection with qualified advice
