Set up a CB radio safely, tune it correctly, and get on the air.
Plan the station
Choose a legal radio, an antenna built for the CB band and suitable feed line. Consider mounting strength, water ingress, clearance for garage doors and overhead obstacles, and access for periodic checks.
- Confirm antenna manufacturer’s mounting requirements
- Route coax away from sharp metal edges
- Maintain safe distance from overhead power lines
Wire power correctly
Use the correct polarity, proper fuse protection and wiring appropriate for the radio’s current. A dedicated properly fused circuit is often preferable to an unknown accessory connection.
- Avoid unprotected connections
- Keep wiring secure and away from heat
- Check supply voltage under transmit load
Adjust antenna match
Use a suitable SWR meter or antenna analyzer, follow the manufacturer’s procedure and start at low power. A short test on several channels can show whether antenna length needs adjustment.
Make your first contact
Begin by listening. Try a relatively clear channel, give your handle and a location in general terms, and request a signal report. Local conditions, terrain, antenna height and propagation all affect what you hear.
