Choosing CB Radio Coax: RG-58, RG-8X and RG-213

Cable loss, connectors and installation quality explained for CB operators.

Loss is part of the antenna system

A coaxial feed line carries RF between the transmitter and antenna. Attenuation increases with length and frequency. Short mobile CB runs can work well with quality, properly installed smaller coax, while long base-station runs may benefit from lower-loss cable.

Which cable makes sense?

RG-58 is common and flexible, but performance varies with manufacturer and construction. RG-8X is often a useful middle ground. RG-213 is larger and can offer lower loss than many smaller cables. Always compare published loss specifications for the exact product.

  • Avoid inexpensive unknown cable with poor shielding or incorrect impedance
  • Use 50-ohm coax designed for RF radio systems
  • Choose connectors compatible with the cable and radio

Moisture and connectors

Water intrusion can cause loss, corrosion and intermittent performance. Weatherproof outdoor connections using appropriate materials without damaging connector seals. Support cable runs to avoid strain.

Why SWR and feed-line loss can be confusing

High loss can make a bad antenna match appear less severe when measured at the radio end. Test the entire system with proper instruments and inspect physical installation first.
