A stronger radio signal starts with a better antenna system, not an external amplifier. These checks are inexpensive and often solve the problems that make CB stations seem weak.
Seven things to check
- Raise a base antenna safely and keep it clear of obstructions.
- Mount a mobile antenna where its ground-plane requirements are best met.
- Measure SWR and follow the antenna maker’s tuning instructions.
- Inspect coax, connectors and waterproofing.
- Avoid unnecessary coax length and kinks.
- Check the power supply under load for the correct voltage.
- Test with a nearby station before concluding that local range is poor.
Don’t confuse low SWR with a good radiating system
A low SWR only indicates a match at the measurement point. A lossy coax run or poor antenna can still waste the transmitted power. Focus on the complete system.
Stay within the rules
FCC-certified CB transmitters and authorized power limits are part of the service. External RF power amplifiers are prohibited for CB operation. Fixing the antenna is a more sustainable improvement.
