Many disappointing CB installations begin with a mounting problem. A convenient location is not always a good RF location, especially on modern vehicles with unusual body panels and limited metal ground plane.
Mistakes to avoid
- Mounting an antenna where it cannot clear overhead hazards.
- Ignoring the antenna manufacturer’s ground-plane and bonding requirements.
- Running coax next to sharp edges, exhaust components or moving vehicle parts.
- Using a short loaded antenna without accounting for tuning sensitivity.
- Trying to repair high SWR by coiling excess coax rather than finding the actual fault.
Better installation order
Select the antenna and mounting location together. Confirm mechanical strength, safe clearances and cable routing before drilling. Once installed, check SWR across the band and make the manufacturer-recommended adjustments in small steps.
