Evaluating condition, modifications and restoration costs on classic sets.
Start with provenance
Model age, known repair history and completeness matter. A radio that lights up is not necessarily transmitting cleanly or receiving at rated sensitivity. Check for unusual additions and nonstandard switches.
Practical checks
Inspect the power connection, case, front panel, microphone socket, control shafts, speaker and antenna jack. Smoke odor, corrosion and missing chassis screws can indicate difficult repairs.
- Ask for clear photos of both external sides
- Request a demonstration into a proper test load
- Budget for capacitors, controls and alignment by a professional
Restoration and legal use
Some collectible radios are best kept as display pieces until inspected. Operating a radio on CB channels requires conformity with applicable regulations. Do not assume a modified transmitter is legal simply because it is vintage.
